Lot Essay

The Swedish painter Öyvind Fahlström used his early interest in poetry, comic strips, and playwriting as a key component of his visual art. Fahlström manipulates language and phonetics in his artworks and recycles figures from comic books and other source materials. In this way, Fahlström blends elements of Surrealism and Pop Art. Column No.4 (IB-affair) is one of a series of screenprints Fahlström made in the early 1970s. These prints use dense text, bright colors and cartoon illustrations to critique America’s military and economic expansion. The titles refers to newspaper columns in the Swedish press.
