Lot Essay

A self-described “American painter of signs,” Robert Indiana’s works explore visual culture, national identity, and personal history through symbols and colors inspired by signage and graphic design. Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (A Little Night Music) references the great Austrian composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The screenprint is based on a painting once gifted to Indiana’s close friend Jack Klein, who helped the artist secure his first studio in the Bowery neighborhood.
