Lot Essay

Shizuko Yoshikawa was one of the first of few Japanese students to attend the Ulm Hochschule für Gestaltung (School of Design), the postwar inheritor of the Bauhaus tradition. Her work infuses the geometric abstraction and simplicity of European modernism with the aesthetic theory of the Japanese Zen tradition. While Yoshikawa spent most oh her life in Switzerland, her oeuvre reflects her dual identity from her Japanese origins and education and her later interactions with the arts and design of mid-century Europe.
