One of few artists to work in the Pop Art tradition through the late twentieth century, Werner Berges’ paintings and prints are noted for their eye-catching color schemes and erotic charge. Along with his American counterparts Mel Ramos and Tom Wesselmannn, Berges’ work involves the refraction and multiplication of the female body and silhouette. Berges’ screenprints are typical of the dissolution of the female form into color gradients and abstract forms. Widely considered the pioneer of German Pop Art, Berges works question beauty standards and the boundaries between the erotic and the abstract.
