Lot Essay

Girtin produced a number of small imaginative compositions in the studio in his later years to cater for the market in his more informal works, and these may be two such drawings. The paper and palette are consistent with his, and the layers of wash carefully superimposed across the whole sheet suggest that it is a studio production purporting to be a sketch made on the spot.
We are grateful to Greg Smith for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.
