A marine painter central to the development of the genre, Serres came to Britain as a prisoner of war in 1745, and made his home in England after his release. In 1786 he visited the western Mediterranean, including Gibraltar, and submitted a painting to the Royal Academy that year entitled View of Europa Point, Gibraltar, no. 161.

The sheet is not laid down but is hinged into a non-acidic mount. There is some slight surface dirt throughout, a repaired tear to the upper right corner and some slight surface abrasion in places. The medium is strong and it reads well.
