Lot Essay

Francis Nicholson was born in Yorkshire and spent his early career there. He produced drawings for Walter Fawkes of Farnley Hall, Turner's great patron, among others. By 1803 he was living in London, and in 1804 was a founder member of the Society of Painters in Water Colours, being elected president in 1812. He continued to exhibit views of Yorkshire throughout his career.
