Lot Essay

Known principally as an oil painter, Wheatley also executed watercolour landscapes in the picturesque tradition, tranquil, spacious and with skilfully drawn figures. His landscapes were worked up in the studio from sketches made on tours of the south of England, the Lake District and Ireland.
