This drawing is likely to date from the late 1760s to early 1770s. It does not appear to relate to a finished painting, but may well depict Andromache pleading with Hector not to go into battle, a subject Romney seems to have considered, but never developed. We are grateful to Alex Kidson for his help in preparing this catalogue entry.

The sheet is not laid down but is hinged into a non-acidic mount. There is some slight surface dirt and a few very small light foxmarks, but the pencil is strong and the sheet reads well.
