This drawing of a contemplative figure appears to have been part of an album to which both Fuseli and his friend James Northcote (1746-1831) contributed, while both were in Italy in 1777. See G. Schiff, Johann Heinrich Füssli, 1741-1825, 1973 , I, p. 84 , and II, p. 602 .

The sheet is backed with Japan paper and then laid down onto a supporting sheet and hinged into a non-acidic mount. There is some slight silver fish damage to the upper right and lower left corners and some surface dirt throughout. There is some discolouration to the paper overall, but the medium reads well.
