Lot Essay

John Baverstock Knight was a follower of Francis Towne (1739-1816), and an honorary exhibitor at the Royal Academy in 1818 and 1819. His drawings emulate Towne's use of pen and ink outline, with planes of receding wash, and are held in the British Museum, Tate Britain, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
Hengwrt, the house seen at the foot of Cader Idris, was the home of Robert Vaughn (1591/2-1667), the Welsh antiquary whose collection of manuscripts including medieval and historical theological works, literature, poetry and law formed a key part of the foundation collection of the National Library of Wales.
