Lot Essay

The style of the present work, and its previous association with Henry Homan, who was involved with a company linked to the production of sets for the Opera House at Covent Garden, indicates that this is a preparatory drawing for John Piper's designs (set and costumes) for 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', staged in February 1961 by the English Opera Group at Covent Garden. The opera was by Benjamin Britten and produced by Sir John Gielgud.

We are very grateful to Rev. Dr Stephen Laird FSA for preparing this catalogue entry.
