This drawing is one of Michael Kauffmann's 'third type' - an unfinished work showing the artist layering washes (see C.M. Kauffmann, John Varley, London, 1984, p. 24). Unusually vibrant, it shows the castle appearing through a low mist and rising out of the river below. For a note on the artist, please see lot 43.
