Lot Essay

Varley probably visited Caernarvon on his first tour through North Wales, although he didn't exhibit a picture of the castle itself until 1810. The traditional view of the castle is seen across the water from the south-west, a view depicted many times by Varley, but here he has chosen to show the less familiar entrance from the town.
