JOHN 'WARWICK' SMITH, O.W.S. (CUMBERLAND 1749-1831 LONDON)
Smith travelled through Italy from 1776 to 1781, and returned to England with a large number of sketches which he would use as the basis for exhibition watercolours for years to come. The present watercolour is such a sheet, worked up in England from his earlier sketches.

The sheet is fully laid down onto an original mount, then tipped into a supporting sheet and hinged into a non-acidic mount. There is some slight scattered foxing in the sky, but the colours are strong and fresh.
