Lot Essay

Born to a wealthy family just outside Exeter, John White Abbott was a surgeon and apothecary, as well as a keen and talented amateur watercolourist. A pupil of Francis Towne (1739-1816), he rarely left Devon, apart from a sketching tour to Scotland and the Lake District in 1791. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1795 and 1805, predominantly Devonshire subjects.
