Lot Essay

Queen Victoria visited St Leonards-on-Sea in 1838, the year of her coronation, nearly a year after her accession to the throne. Dodd had by this date already been employed as 'Painter in Water Colours to their Royal Highnesses the Duchess of Kent & the Princess Victoria', and seems to have travelled at times with Queen Victoria, capturing her visits and engagements.
