This suggestive sketch of Lincoln Cathedral, seen from the south-east, is painted from a stretch of common meadow beside the River Witham, which was within the parish of Washingborough. Lincoln Cathedral was one of De Wint’s favourite subjects and he returned to it often, relishing the juxtaposition of pastoral with the architectural. For a note on the artist, please see lot 45.

The sheet is not laid down bit is tipped into a suppporting sheet at the edges and hinged into a non-acidic mount. The watercolour is in good overall condition and the sheet reads well.
