Lot Essay

The artist's grandfather was a Dutch confectioner who emigrated to England. His father Jacob was a drawing master at Westminster and Draughtsman to the Society of Antiquaries; after his premature death the young Robert Schnebbelie was brought up at the Antiquaries' expense. He drew topographical subjects for inclusion in the Gentleman's Magazine and Londinia Illustrata (1808); others were exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1803 to 1821.
