This watercolour is a preparatory study for a larger oil painting (with Martyn Gregory, 1981). It depicts a Dutch fishing harbour with herring boats sheltering from the storm, and was painted on Allan's 1888 trip to Holland with Archibald David Reid (1844-1908).

Watercolour on paper laid on canvas on panel. Examined out of the frame. There is some staining and frame abrasion to the extreme edges. There is some time staining to the upper right quadrant There are some signs of fading to the pigments in places and some minor surface dirt. Subject to the above the work appears to be in very good overall condition.
