THOMAS MATTHEW ROOKE, R.W.S. (LONDON 1842-1942 NORTHAMPTON)
Three views of Margate, Kent: Margate jetty from Hodge's Flagstaff; Margate pier and jetty from the fort; and Margate pier and jetty from the infirmary
These early watercolours by Rooke, made when he was 22, are far from the decorative, Pre-Raphaelite work he is most associated with at Morris & Co. and when working with Edward Burne-Jones. Here we see him working within the conventions of early 19th Century watercolour painting, using an almost monochrome palette to depict topographical views.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The sheets are not laid down but are tipped in to supporting sheets and then hinged into a single non-acidic mount. There is some slight discolouration to the paper throughout, and the largest has some slight scattered foxing, but they are in good condition overall and the colours are strong and fresh.
