Lot Essay

Rowlandson made his first tour of the Isle of Wight in 1784, and then two further trips in the 1790s, alongside Henry Wigstead (c. 1745-1800) and his brother-in-law Samuel Howitt (1756-1822). The party travelled there by passage boat from Southampton, and the present drawing, numbered '2', was probably made on the way into Southampton on one of these expeditions. In this wide panoramic composition, Rowlandson shows his skill as a landscape draughtsman.
