Lot Essay

The traveller and Orientalist Sir George Staunton, 2nd baronet (1781-1859) bought Leigh Park, Hampshire, in 1820, following his return from an embassy to Hong Kong and Beijing. He made substantial alterations to the buildings and landscape, particularly building follies of various sorts in the grounds. While much of the house and buildings are now lost, the Gothick Library, designed by the architect Lewis Vulliamy (1791-1871) and built in 1832, survives today as part of Staunton Country Park.
