WILLIAM GAWIN HERDMAN (LIVERPOOL 1805-1882)
The ‘Grand Fancy Fair and Flower Show’ at Prince's Park, Liverpool, 1849, with a balloon ascent
Herdman was active in the Liverpool Academy, until his expulsion in 1857 for his protest against the Academy's award of its annual prize to J. E. Millais for The Blind Girl. His chief achievement was as a topographical artist, recording the streets of Liverpool, and publishing them as lithographs as Pictorial Relics of Ancient Liverpool. The Fancy Fair was held on 8, 9 and 10 August 1849 to raise funds for the Liverpool Hospitals. Hot air balloons had been invented in the 1780s and were still rare and exotic attractions by the mid-19th Century. We are grateful to Ann Bukantas of Liverpool Museums for her help in preparing this catalogue entry.

The sheet is not laid down but is hinged into a non-acidic mount. There is some slight discolouration to the sheet throughout and a few small scattered foxmarks. There is some cracking to the gum arabic but the colours are good and the sheet reads well.
