Lot Essay

Herdman was active in the Liverpool Academy, until his expulsion in 1857 for his protest against the Academy's award of its annual prize to J. E. Millais for The Blind Girl. His chief achievement was as a topographical artist, recording the streets of Liverpool, and publishing them as lithographs as Pictorial Relics of Ancient Liverpool.
The Fancy Fair was held on 8, 9 and 10 August 1849 to raise funds for the Liverpool Hospitals. Hot air balloons had been invented in the 1780s and were still rare and exotic attractions by the mid-19th Century.
