Müller embarked on a seven month sketching tour of Europe in July 1834, accompanied by George Arthur Fripp (1813-1893). They travelled through Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Italy, reaching Venice at the end of September 1834, and staying there for nearly two months. Many of the sketches he made there were taken from gondolas.

The sheet is not laid down but is tipped into a supporting sheet and hinged into a non-acidic mount. There is some slight discolouration throughout, and some surface dirt to the verso but the medium is strong and the sheet reads well.
