Lot Essay
Turner made regular summer sketching tours, exploring landscapes beyond his Oxfordshire home. He made a brief trip to Clifton Gorge and the River Wye in 1808 or 1809, when the present drawing must have been executed. His celebrated watercolour Wychwood Forest, Oxfordshire (Victoria & Albert Museum) was exhibited in 1809, and shares its closed, dense composition with the present sheet. For a biographical note on the artist, please see lot 5.
