Lot Essay

Westall visited Madeira twice. The first, in 1801, was en-route to New Holland (Australia), where Westall was employed as draughtsman on Matthew Flinders expedition on the Investigator. The expedition was beset by bad luck, and he did not return to England until February 1805. He was elected a fellow of the Linnean Society that December, and set out to re-visit Madeira and on to Jamaica.
