Born and raised in Tokyo in 1948, Sugimoto is acclaimed for both the conceptual and philosophical aspects of his work which explore themes of the transience of life, time, empiricism and metaphysics. In the series Conceptual Forms, Sugimoto photographed mathematical models fabricated at the turn of the 19th century in Germany. Used as teaching aids, these models illustrated the dynamics of machinery from the Industrial Revolution, giving visible form to theoretical and unseen mathematical hypotheses.
