Lot Essay
"A Tartar Hunt" is a standard Chinese painting theme, first popularized by the Southern Song court artists Chen Chuchong in the early thirteenth century. The Chinese had admired and emulated the equestrian skills and derring-do of the Tartars and Mongols in warfare and hunting. The colorful, exotic costumes and artifacts of the nomads fascinated the Chinese. For a lacquer inro with the same motif in the sale, see lot 95.
