Lot Essay

Einstein at 5 years old: an unknown photograph.

The earliest known photograph of young Albert dates from 1882, when he was around 3 years old. The present photograph shows Einstein two years later, at around the time that he began his formal education at a Catholic elementary school in Munich. Although another photograph from the same session, showing Einstein and his sister together (see lot 2), has frequently been republished, the present image is apparently unknown and unpublished.
