Lot Essay

Albert and Maja Einstein.

Although Albert Einstein was born in the city of Ulm, the family moved to Munich in 1880, when he was only one year old, and his sister Maja was born there a year later. Munich was essentially the home of his childhood. The present photograph shows the young siblings towards the end of this relatively long period of stability: in 1893, the electrical business run by their father and uncle began to fail, and in June 1894 their parents and Maja departed for Milan, leaving Albert to continue his schooling in Munich alone.
