Lot Essay

An 'avalanche of paper', the primacy of childhood friendships and the beauty of his new theory.

'Hopelessly buried under an avalanche of paper', Einstein still sends heartfelt thanks for his sister's birthday greetings, which 'show again that nothing in later life equals the friendship of childhood'. As for his work: 'The electricity theory, based on distant parallelism, becomes ever more beautiful. Whether it is true, I still do not know. We shall soon see'.
