Lot Essay

The death of his beloved sister.

'Yesterday we accompanied Maja to the crematorium': Maja's death had followed a 'feverish lung infection', fortunately accompanied by complete unconsciousness and freedom from pain. She had never ceased thinking of Paul: 'In these years of suffering she was always filled with the thought of going back to you and to her home in Florence' – she had been unaware of the nature of her illness and of her worsening condition. Paul's conduct during this period was exemplary: 'You acquitted yourself over this long period in a really exemplary way. Your regular, sympathetic letters formed her finest experiences. I really admired how you always knew how to say something to give her pleasure, even though you were fully aware of the hopeless situation. I am really grateful to you for this, and the good St Peter will also give you high credit for it ...'.

His last words on his beloved sister remember their shared hours of reading in the evenings: 'She had real friends here, who were really attached to her, and our reading together every evening always gave her renewed pleasure right until the last period'.
