Lot Essay

Memories of summer heat, and his incompetence at housework.

Winteler has sent Einstein a painting, which delights him: 'It radiates something of dry heat, which in our current frog-like existence [Froschdasein] triggers wonderful faded memories'. They are very much enjoying the peace of the countryside at Caputh, and Maja, who is visiting, has now learned to sail. He praises Winteler's abilities as a househusband in Maja's absence, which contrast favourably with his own efforts in that line: 'It is good that you are experienced in the household arts, so that life as a "grass-widower" does not fall too heavy on you. I have also tried it in the past, but with very moderate results, as the cooking didn't seem to work out quite right [weils mit dem Kochen nicht recht klappen wollte]'.
