The image shows the iconic Einstein of the post-war years: dressed with an informality bordering on neglect, a baggy jumper having replaced the ubiquitous leather jacket of the mid-1930s; hair long, and pipe in hand – held more out of habit than use, as in practice he had virtually given up smoking in the early 1940s on the advice of his doctor.
