Lot Essay
'My new theory is finished': progress with the Unified Field Theory, and dealing with his mass of birthday correspondence.
Einstein reports progress on his Unified Field Theory: 'My new theory is finished, but I still do not know how much in it is true'. His 50th birthday (ten days previously) has brought a flood of paper: 'For the moment I am lying under the birthday paper-avalanche, and must for the moment work my way out of it'. His children are coming to stay at Easter, 'even the married, chastened [Hans] Albert'. He is grateful for the letters from Maja and Paul, which perhaps included a portrait of Maja: 'I am delighted with your second exemplar, which is in any case incomparably thinner than you [das auf jeden Fall unvergleichlich dünner wird als Du]'.
In 1927, much to his father's disapproval, Hans Albert had married Frieda Knecht, a woman nine years his senior.
