Lot Essay

'My new theory now stands formally perfect': on Unified Field Theory, the Zionist congress and his country house in Caputh.

Einstein's new theory 'is making fine progress so that it now stands formally perfect. Whether it is true, I still do not know'. He is in Zurich for the Zionist Congress, at which 'Jews from all lands and of all colours are standing behind the Palestine project'. He is staying with his first wife, Mileva; his younger son, Eduard, is about to complete his schooling, and will come to visit Maja for a couple of weeks at the end of September, if she agrees: 'He is a splendid youngster with many interests; you will both get on with him very well'. As for Einstein himself, his health is much better, but Elsa is now as sickly as he is. They are building themselves a country retreat in Caputh (outside Berlin), 'which will indeed be very beautiful but devours terrifying amounts of money, so that with us too the spectre of poverty has appeared'.
