Lot Essay

A portrait at the time of the Eddington eclipse expedition.

Although the Helios studio also had premises in Winterthür, the photograph was most likely taken in Zurich. Einstein's appearance is suggestive of a date around 1919 – he spent several weeks in Zurich in January-February that year lecturing at the University, and visited again in July and August. The year 1919 was bookended by two significant dates: his divorce from Mileva was finalised on (ironically) 14 February, whilst the announcement in early November of the verification of general relativity by the Eddington eclipse expedition was to catapult Einstein to an unprecedented level of global fame.
