A summer of sailing and music-making: news of his holiday with his children, as well as darker reflections on their upbringing.

Einstein has spent time over the summer with his sons in Kiel, 'where we diligently sailed and made music. Tete [Eduard] has shot up, is now almost taller than [Hans] Albert and I, a bookworm, intellectually untidy, unreliable. He writes poems, plays Bach from memory, but is quite childish and impractical. Albert is a bit raw, a touch tyrannical, very efficient and clever ...'. There is a position ready for him in the Anschütz factory when he graduates the next year. In the summer he visited his first wife Mileva, who 'has now more or less reconciled to her fate': but his children have been left marked by their childhood, which is 'the revenge of fate for my having married a foreigner. But it could have been much worse'. The weather is so bad 'that one can do nothing but work'.

Einstein as always opens by apologising for not writing sooner: his planned visit to the Wintelers in Florence will not be happening soon, though they will soon see 'the most pleasant part of our society', namely his stepdaughter Margot (at this point another hand, perhaps Maja, adds the comment 'shameless man!'). He compares Margot's character to Maja's own, although Margot's interests tend more to nature and art.
