Lot Essay

Happy memories of Florence, but tired of too much travel.

Einstein has 'a happy memory' of his visit to the Wintelers in Florence in October. His lectures in Bologna immediately afterwards went well – indeed 'better than was to be expected' [a reference to the fact that Einstein was lecturing in his rather approximate Italian]. He has since been to Holland, but 'now have it in mind to pack in the travelling'. He has visited 'Mathias', a shared acquaintance in Zurich, who seemed surprisingly friendly. Mileva [his first wife] is complaining that an arrangement has fallen short: 'please see to it that it is all put right, without my getting any further trouble'. He is not sure whether the Wintelers have yet moved to Fiesole, so sends the card to their old address [leaving it to be redirected on the address panel by the post office].

1921 had in fact been a heavy year's travelling for Einstein, as it also included his first visits to England and the United States.
