Lot Essay

Maja's broken hip.

Einstein's writes with news of a wretchedly unlucky accident: 'I must tell you today that Maja had the misfortune to fall at home on the way from her room and to break her femur right next to her hip joint. The break is relatively clean, but the recovery will take a long time and lying still for long periods is not without its dangers for her'. For the moment she is in hospital, as caring for her has been too much for Einstein's stepdaughter Margot. Maja has taken it well, and is in no pain: such accidents are always a risk 'for us old people', and particularly for Maja, given the existing problems with her balance. Einstein's son Hans Albert and his family are in Zurich, and Winteler may see them at some point.
