Lot Essay

A family tragedy.

The son of Besso's sister-in-law Rosa has committed suicide: 'I am terribly sorry for Rosa; she is such a splendid person and has so much to bear'. Einstein has received a telegram from Besso cancelling their proposed meeting in the mountains, and expresses understanding that he cannot leave home under the sad circumstances. He himself and his son Eduard will now proceed directly to Zurich, as the weather is uncertain: Einstein will be there until the 14th, and they could meet somewhere between Zurich and Bern: 'In any case it would be great if we could see each other once again'.
