Lot Essay

News of Mileva’s health, and his own ‘hibernating’ existence.

Besso, who is in Berne, has told Einstein that Mileva’s condition is improving: ‘But this is a weak consolation in relation to your diagnosis’ (Zangger had expressed the opinion that Mileva was suffering from cerebral tuberculosis). He is happy in any case that she is being well looked after. ‘Apart from this worry, I am living peacefully and contentedly in my quiet hermit’s cell, to which no newspaper gets through’: he compares himself to someone hibernating, removed from human feelings.
