Lot Essay

Returning to Zurich for an honorary doctorate.

Einstein has returned directly to Zurich, as he was tired from the Solvay Congress in Brussels and subsequently a visit to London (where he was notably toasted by George Bernard Shaw during a banquet in his honour): ‘But I would be very happy if you could come for a bit, perhaps out of affection for your alma mater [the Zurich Polytechnic, where Einstein was being given an honorary doctorate at a ceremony to celebrate its 75 years] or even beforehand’. He is initially living at the address of Frau Karr, ‘later perhaps at my ex-wife’s (später vielleicht bei der Verflossenen)’.
