Lot Essay

A stop in Berne on the way to Japan.

'On around 3 or 4 October I will visit you in Berne en route to Japan. Then we can discuss everything that I – wretch that I am – did not answer you about in writing'. A postscript notes that he has seen their mutual friend Heinrich Zangger, who is in Berlin.

Einstein had always been a somewhat dilatory correspondent, but this had worsened to the extent that Besso was beginning to wonder if his own letters had got lost in the post.
