‘Theory of the Detection of Short Bursts of Gravitation Radiation.’ Offprint from: Physical Review D, Vol. 4, No. 8, pp.2191-2197. [Brookhaven, NY: The American Physical Society,] 15 October 1977.

Offprint of an early paper that would lead to his discovery of Hawking Radiation. American physicist Joe Weber reported the detection of gravitational waves using a bar detector (although in fact the claimed detection was not correct). This paper explores possible origins of short (millisecond) bursts of gravitational radiation, arguing that the most likely sources were the collapse of a massive star or a merger of a compact binary.

Quarto (269 x 200mm). Stapled self-wrappers (punch holes). Provenance: the estate of Professor Stephen Hawking.
