A hood of purple and black watered silk and yellow velvet, embroidered with the initials 'S W H', worn at a ceremony at the Royal Society on 17 July 2017.

Approx. 95 x 105 x 57cm (laid flat). Provenance: the estate of Professor Stephen Hawking.

Stephen Hawking's doctoral hood, worn for the award of an honorary doctorate from Imperial College in 2017. The award was made inrecognition of Hawking's achievements over a 50-year career, which shaped the direction of research in theoretical physics and cosmology. Hawking said of the award: 'I have always felt a deep affinity with Imperial. It gives me great pleasure to accept this honour. Imperial has changed the way we think about the universe. Through its world-leading research into theoretical physics, string theory, cosmology, and quantum gravity, Imperial probes the boundaries of human knowledge. I am proud to say that five of my greatest students have risen to become Imperial professors, and some of my most fruitful collaborations have been with Imperial’s theoretical physics group'.
