Lot Essay

In the late 1850's, James Hayllar became popular for his paintings of families and children. Each of his nine children received their artistic training from their father and four of his daughters would enjoy notable careers as artists. The present work, Hayllar's 1891 entry to the Royal Academy exhibition, possibly depicts his daughter Mary with one of the artist's grandchildren on her lap.
