Cesare Lapini was a sculptor of allegorical and genre subjects and models after the Antique which he sold with great success from his Florence workshop to an elite global clientele during the late 19th century. He exhibited frequently in Rome and extensively at the Exposition universelle in Paris in 1900. The internationally celebrated artist was known for his unique compositions such as those of daintly posed numphs frozen in motion, the inquisitive and mischievous antics of children, and allegorical figures stepping forward to take off in flight such as Cupid and Pysche sold at Christie’s, New York, 13 October 2021, lot 20. In 1904, a version of this model was exhibitied at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition or World's Fair in St. Louis.

The surface is clean. The stone with natural inclusions and colorations. A spot of discoloration on the bun. Rubbing at the high points. Small chips and nibbles in the flowers and small areas of fill including near the top and in the adjacent fingers and an area around mid-thigh. Pinkish discoloration on the reverse at the height of the raised foot and surrounding areas associated with a repair. A hairline crack in the proper left thumb. A well disguised repair at the neck, proper right shoulder and in the right forearm. A repair at the upper edge of the front of the base. Chips and nibbles at the edge of the base.
