The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
We are grateful to Hamish Dewar Fine Art Conservation for preparing the following condition report (written communication 3 March 2022):
Structural condition
The artist's panel is uncradled and is structurally sound and secure with an even profile. There is a label on the reverse which is protected with tape and melinex. There is a repaired near horizontal split running in from the right vertical edge of the panel, through the sky and just above the roof on the right of the composition. This is entirely stable and really only visible in raking or ultraviolet light. The overall structural condition appears to be very good.
Paint surface
The paint surface has an even varnish layer.
Inspection under ultraviolet light shows the retouching within the repaired split mentioned above, which is approximately 25 cm in length. There is also a very fine horizontal line of retouching, approximately 8 cm in length, running across the sky and into the building on the left of the composition. There are other small, scattered retouchings in the sky and I could see only minimal retouchings within the details of the figures and buildings, all of which appear to be very well preserved. There are other small scattered retouchings and there may be further retouchings that I could not identify under ultraviolet light.
There are two very small indentations in the panel in the upper left of the sky.
Summary
The painting would therefore appear to be in good and stable condition and no further work is required.
